In 1920, the same developer responsible for the Country Club Plaza was looking to provide some of Kansas City's residents with a community in which they could "plan for permanence". The idea was, that by providing families with lovely homes, on tree lines streets, within walking distance of a "shop of every nature", the neighborhood would be solidified as a place where people could live happily for decades, sustaining the neighborhood as an entity and securing property values for years to come. Brookside's design is credited as an originator of the "New Urbanism" design movement and city planning style and of redlining through the use of exclusionary code and deed restrictions.
A visit to modern-day Brookside quickly confirms the original idea has been realized. Meticulously maintained homes with manicured lawns dot tree lined streets, hidden pocket parks tucked away throughout. The neighborhood still possesses a nearly perfect facade and family friendly air, all within a short walk's distance of a local "shop of every nature".
